Barrenjoey Headland & Lighthouse

Headland walk · Palm Beach

Sandstone lighthouse built in 1881 on Barrenjoey Head, at Sydney's northernmost point. The walk up from Governor Phillip Park is short and steep, with views over Palm Beach and Pittwater from the top and whales offshore in winter. The inside opens only on guided tours, and there is no vehicle access.

The lighthouse, its oil room and the keepers' cottages were built from sandstone quarried on the headland and have never been painted. One of the two tracks up is the Smugglers Track, cut around 1850 by customs officers watching for contraband coming into Broken Bay. Bring binoculars in whale season.
