Hemingway's Manly Brings a French Bistro to the Beachfront
On one side of the road: Manly Beach. On the other: a little French bistro with a fondness for books, coffee and a proper dinner.
Hemingway's occupies 48 North Steyne, an address that could easily get by on the ocean view alone. Instead, it has made a name for a different rhythm: café by day, French-leaning bistro and cocktail spot in the evening, when the kitchen is open.
A French touch on North Steyne
Hemingway's describes its food as traditional French cooking with an Australian seaside influence. The menu has featured croque madame, steak-frites, salmon rillettes and ratatouille, balanced with familiar breakfast choices and a drinks list made for lingering.
There is a sense of the old-fashioned bistro here, without having to leave Manly. It is somewhere you can sit with a coffee across from the surf, or return later for a more deliberate meal.
Pick the right time
Hemingway's hours change considerably across the week. Its official schedule lists Tuesday as closed, Wednesday as dinner-only and Sunday as a daytime service; other days have split morning and evening sessions. Don't assume that a morning visit automatically means lunch or dinner will follow.
There is also an upstairs function room for celebrations and private gatherings, with capacity advertised for up to 50 guests.
